My Hubs and I decided on Lauryl Mae for the baby's name. I came up with Lauryl in the first place because about 2 years ago, I met a client whose name is Lauryl spelled with the y.
I loved how it looked with the y which is surprising because I can't stand when people spell names with unnecessary y's... no offense to anyone who does. Sometimes it is just hard to look at for me.
Is Lauryl hard to look at? Or iyo, should it just be spelled Laurel? And what about with the middle? Lauryl Mae or Laurel Mae?
I am thinking too much into this, I know! But she'll be stuck with this name the rest of her life.

I think I like Laurel Mae better, but I'm not a fan of unnecessary Y's, either, so I am probably a little biased. Plus, for some reason I say the name correctly in my head but I say Laur-rile outloud.
FWIW, though, my boss' name is William, and I always say his name correctly outloud, but in my head I say it like Principal Figgins from Glee. To summerize, I'm strange.

I am not a fan of the y's thrown in either, but I must say, I love the way Lauryl Mae looks and sounds. (I also love Lauryn Hill, so that could be why. And I love the name Maebell, so Lauryl Mae really works for me). The child will have to correct people for the rest of her life though that her name is spelled with a y. It could be worse.

In general I'm not a fan of uncommon spellings of names. My husband has a pretty basic name, and my FIL decided to get creative with the spelling when they came in to do the birth certificate. My MIL was so drugged up, she didn't notice until later. No one ever spells DH's name right and it irritates the crap out of him. That said, if we do end up having children, they probably will end up with middle names with uncommon spellings, because they would be named after someone who had an uncommon spelling to start with.

I'm not usually a fan of unnecessary y's either, but for some reason Lauryl doesn't bug me. I have a friend whose DD is Camryn, and that doesn't bug me either. My name has an extra e and while it is not completely unheard of, I usually have to doublecheck things to make sure it is spelled correctly.

I'm not a typically a fan of alternative spelling for names either, but like others Lauryl doesn't really bother me with the y. She will have to spell it for people and deal with it being spelled wrong. I gave my children less common names but with the most common spelling I could find, and of course I get their names spelled incorrectly from time to time. Especially Maisy- I get Maisey and Maizy a lot or it gets confused with the name Macy. I knew before we had her that it would be something she will have to deal with, but it was the name I really wanted. I just have to hope that it isn't something that bothers her as she grows up.

Thanks for your input, everyone. Makes me feel better... I guess I have some time to think about it.

I think it looks nice with a y. It makes it more feminine and it's really pretty with the middle name. My first pic for A was Adalyn with Addy for a nickname but H said it sounded too much like Adderal or Ridalin and she would end up with ADD. But I digress. I like the y.

I also usually don't care for the unnecessary y's, but Lauryl doesn't bother me. If it were up to me though, I would probably go with Laurel. As a Meghan with an H, I've spent my whole life having to spell my name for people even though it's a common name. People always misspell it and as a kid I could never find any of that personalized crap with my correct spelling, lol! Is it a huge deal? Nope, of course not. But it would personally be on my mind - in fact, I wanted to spell Ellie's full name as Elisabeth, but then I knew she'd probably always be "Elisabeth with an S," so I stuck with the Z instead. I do love Lauryl Mae though, no matter how you spell it! It sounds so sweet! Awwww, I'm so excited for you!

I'm very traditional when it comes to name spellings. I like the look for Laurel personally, but it's your baby. It's not like you are putting something totally random that makes no sense. What drives me nuts is apostrophes.... ugh....
